Evaluation Question 4: How did you use new technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

How did you use new technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?
 Script for Soundcloud file:

The use of new technologies was key to the creation of both my music video and ancillary texts. I used a range of technology which I had used previously and also had never used before allowing me to use past experience whilst gaining first hand knowledge of how to implement these new technologies and see first hand the diverse effect they had on my media products. As times move forward the role of technology is becoming increasingly important throughout the world of media, with technological advances and creations providing advancements over competition. The use of key technologies was essential for the creation of my media products to the highest and most professional of standards. I used new technologies in all elements of production including construction, research, planning and finally evaluation purposes.

In terms of technology one of the most influential pieces of equipment I used was the Drift Innovation Ghost S Waterproof Full HD 1080p Sports Action Camera which allowed me to create a crisp film for my music video. One beneficial element of the Drift Camera was the ability to create our action shots without the risk of the camera falling off the harness and breaking, in addition to the fish eye lens which could capture wide shots throughout and rotate 160 degrees giving us the ability for a horizontal angle of filming when it was harnessed on any person.

For the photographs for our Digipak and magazine advert, we used the Canon EOS 650D DSLR camera to produce a number of different photographs using various lenses and the zoom feature. Furthermore I experimented with both manual and automatic focus features enabling me to create creative photos which would add to the digipak and magazine adverts individuality. The use of the diverse lighting settings and the manual focus gave me the ability to produce a ghostly looking photo which enhances the house music genre.

In the post production stage of creating my media products Final cut pro was an essential tool in helping to create firstly the music video as well as enabling me to edit key feedback videos. The large amounts of footage which I shot meant that Final cut pro as an editing tool was essential in breaking up key parts of footage which I would include in the video. The advanced technology of the software meant that I could edit the film, import the MP3 track as well as creating visually stimulating transitions and special effects such as slow motion. Furthermore the use of this software allowed basic and essential continuity editing such as the inclusion of smooth and unnoticeable transitions.

I used Photoshop throughout the development of both the magazine advert and digipak. The use of Photoshop allowed me to adjust and alter images to make them perfect this included fading images for the back cover and song booklet inside the digipak, furthermore the 'Eraser' tool allowed me to remove blemishes from the images used for both ancillary texts which made the overall product cleaner and more professional looking. Another specific example of the implementation of Photoshop was its use to alter the colouration upon the band members face due to the shots being taken on a particularly cold day.

Fireworks was key in the design and development of the production/band logo, we used the logo from our artist G
oldstar, and from there we used negative colourways to produce a blurred yet 3D effect. This we then also used in our digipak in the section where the CD would be placed, as in real media texts such as Muse, they also use their logo as their CD holder.

The internet was of paramount importance during the research stages of production, I used a range of internet to gain a variety of results when researching. The three main internet sources I used were Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome and Internet Explorer. To make the task of research easier the use of search engines saved a lot of time and was a key way of discovering research effectively and efficiently. I used both Google and Bing for research purposes, the 'images' sections of both search engines were particularly useful when gathering images of professional magazine adverts and digipaks which I used for influence and comparison to my own products.

I used YouTube mainly to locate house music videos which I could take influence from. I looked for key conventions within these videos and then manipulated and changed them with creative flair to include in my own music video. For example in Avicii's "The Nights" he also uses a first person view in all his shots, which we recreated for our own video, hence it relating to the house music genre.

Soundcloud was a key part of research as it allowed me to research the indie-rock genre specifically and discover bands which would influence my own products. Furthermore the most important element of Soundcloud is that it allowed me to locate Goldstar's page and from their select the song and album which I would base my music video and promotional package around. I also used soundcloud myself for evaluation question 4 because it gives a more personal imput from myself to my viewer on how ive used these different technologies.

I used Microsoft PowerPoint for my evaluation question 2. I used PowerPoint because it allowed me to compile a large amount of text and images and present them in an aesthetically pleasing formation. The simplicity and ease of use is what drew me to using PowerPoint for my evaluations. After I had completed the PowerPoints I then uploaded them to Slideshare which allowed me to share them on various formats, most importantly my blog. Slideshare was an easy way of presenting my PowerPoint which displayed it exactly how I had created it, furthermore it is easy for people to view my evaluation questions

I used prezi for my evaluation question 1, I chose to use prezi because of its ease of use and effectiveness in displaying both text, images and video. One feature of prezi which was beneficial over the likes of Microsoft PowerPoint was the 'Insert' selection which allowed me to import pictures form my files and directly from Google as well as uploading YouTube videos from my channel. Another positive aspect of prezi is its ease of upload to sites such as blogger which is where all my evaluations are placed, furthermore once prezi has been uploaded the viewing process is very simple and uncomplicated for viewers.

I used Blogger for my evaluation question 3 because overall blogger was key to all aspects of my production process including: Construction, Research, Planning and Evaluation. The use of a blog enabled me to track all the work I had completed, having all of my work in one place made access and the overall production process very easy. All aspects of production were placed on the group blog, most importantly the final music video and ancillary texts as well as my four individual evaluation questions. Without blogger enabling me to keep my work together and in the same place I very much doubt the products I produced would be at the level they are. Blogger's simplicity of use was key to my success with it and major factors was the ease of uploading various different forms of work whether it be pictures, text or even a YouTube video. The continuous use of blogger week in week out allows me to see the progress I have made over time as an individual and part of a group.

Evaluation Question 3 - What have you learnt from your audience feedback?

Evaluation Question 3 - What have you learnt from your audience feedback?

Because our group ourselves are aged 17-18 and we know key aspects of music that our generation would like, we decided that our target audience should be around the same age as us, as this would firstly be a whole lot easier to gain information from our audience as we would be able to ask friends around our social lives, and because if we chose a different generation say 30-50 year old's we wouldn't know what type of music they would listen to and it would cause too many unnecessary problems and issues. The Teenage generation are mainly into the house genre, this is because of the surge of excitement and delight the music brings. Personally experiencing music festivals such as Reading 2015, I could see how our generation acts around different genres, yet the house genre being the most ex tactic and popular.

We can tell by the use of the charts the the surge of house music is on the rise, although it might no be just the house genre, key conventions of the house genre appear in singles that reach the top of the charts as well. As we can see below, in the top 5, at least 2 of the tracks are from the house music genre, this being with the artists Calvin Harris and SeeB. This proving that the popularity of House music is now taking over the chars and hence giving evidence that more and more people listen to house music everyday. This was good information to find as it shows that we would have an audience when producing our music video.

Social media is the biggest and broadest way to find information on artists and events to see when audience members can personally go see the artist themselves. Websites such as Instagram and Facebook show how many people follow and regularly keep in contact with their favourite artists. we can see this through the artist of Calvin Harris, one of the most influential House music artists of our generation. On his Instagram we can see that he has 5.6 million followers and on Facebook he has over 13.7 million likes showing that his popularity comes from the music he makes, but not only that because if we then look at the people who have followed him and liked his page we can see that the age of those people are 16-24 year old's which is our target audience. Both of his pages keep his fans updated on his new music, his new album released, when he is next playing shows and also just his normal day to day life. This in-depth connectivity gives the target audience to get an insight into the House genre, about how it is made and about the effects of being a well know artist. From this he gives the target audience a reason to follow in his works.

When making our final adjustments to our video we decided to get feedback from our friends Karl and Joe since they listen to the House genre (and are in the video) and we wanted to know specifically if they thought our product was professional and if they could see it on TV. Karl responding with "I think so yeah" and Joe saying "Yeah Definitely!" and then when Joe starts to compare my video with "Avicii and Calvin Harris" I knew that this would be able to attract our target audience and that I had produced an amazing looking video.

Our Print Products, a digipak and a magazine advert, was designed by using Adobe Photoshop. It consists of of several photographs of the band members and also consists of several stills which can b seen in the music video. In our feedback of the digipak we can see that everything we included into it was necessary in conveying that the band was producing house music. Stacio (the voice in the video) tells us that it is clear enough to see that this digipak is for the house genre, also that he likes the "blurs" in the pictures which we decided to put as a central theme in all the photos because it creates a sense of nostalgia and adrenaline which can also be seen in our actual music video.

I also presented the video to my friendship group without telling them what they were about to watch, yet however the only information we gave them was that the band members and i were selected to be in a music video which they miraculously believed. After seeing the video every single person was amazed of the visuals they saw, also they loved the song choice and how the video attracted them to watch it more, hence creating repeatability. After telling them that we produced and edited this ourselves, they at first didn't believe what we were saying but then they congratulated us because they believed that it looked so professional they could go onto their TVs and watch it themselves. This was a huge success for us as from this information we got a genuine response that was almost unbiased since some already believed we created it.

In conclusion, i believe that the three products my group and I have made look professional enough to be used in the real life market, and that through the conventions used it conveys our skills at producing our own media products in the future. It attracted the target audience of 16-24 year old's perfectly and even though it was designed for people of this age, older generations liked the video as well. If I could redo the whole experience again, I would make it consist of more sports and possibly create a narrative of the band going to another country if I had the money to produce it.

Evaluation Question 2 - How effective is the combination of your main and ancillary texts?

I have developed all three of our products where by they all have a link and a synergistic

element to them,  I have done this through all three stages of pre-production, production and p

post-production as I had to think about the link throughout the process in order for it to be a

success.

 Music Video:

Digipak:

Magazine Advert:

What connects all three of our products?

The connection between our three products is the 4 boys. After we had filmed out music video

we thought that it would only be logical to include the people that were featured heavy in the

music video to be in the two print products to make it clear to our target audience who is in the

group and if anyone was to look at the all three of our products it would be clear who is in the

band. Moreover to have a strong link between our two print products ( Magazine Advert &

Digipak) we decided to put an effect on both of the pictures used. We went out separately to

take still images for our print products to make sure the quality of the picture was really good,t

he picture that we used for our Magazine Advert was taken in darkness but we added effect

through editing and it turned out to look really professional.

Do all three of your products develop each other?

On our Digipak we have a logo at the bottom that is a production company which is also on our

magazine which adds a synergistic element as well as making both products look professional.

Furthermore the Facebook, Twitter and YouTube Logo are all in the bottom right of the

magazine advert if you wanted to find out more about him or listen to more of his music.

Having Gold star on the steps on the magazine advert really empathizes he is the artist of the piece

of music and sell's his name as the leading name, there are no lyric's in the Digipak as there are very

little words however we did follow the conventions of a Digipak within our genre and the songs that

are on the album are on the back panel of the Digipak.

We constructed our Digipak pack in two ways. We wanted the quality of the pictures to be really

good so we didn't want to screen-grab 6 pictures from our music video, so we decided to mix

pictures of still's from when we made our magazine advert, we then picked out still' from our

music video that were of high quality and we wanted to use in our Digipak. We ended up picking

two so that it would have the link between the music video and the Digipak.

One of the panels was taken up from the disk in which we used GoldStars official logo to fit the

shape of the disc which brings in the synergistic element of GoldStars logo and something that

you would recognise.

The last three panels were made up from all still photo's that were all in contention to be used

for our magazine advert so we still wanted to include them but they weren't good enough to be

the main image, all three of these photo's are linked as they are all edited with the same effect

and all taken in the dark adding the faded element to them.

Overall the three products that I have created are to a very high standard and all work well together

and look like they would be sold as a package not three separate products with all three products

being finished to a very professional standard across all three stages of pre-production, production

and post-production. Across all three products there is a strong synergistic element which really binds

all three products together.

Evaluation Question 4 - Thomas Gilbert

Evaluation Question 3 - Thomas Gilbert

What have you learnt from your audience feedback?

Our initial target audience was teenagers and young adults aged 16-24. This is because we know that this is the most popular age group that listen to dance and house music. I know from personal experience as I went to Wireless 2015 and when Avicii came on, the majority of the crowd was our age and some a bit older, there wasn't really anyone under the age of 16. Also as we are all 17/18  in this group and we all love this type of music we would also be part of the target audience we are aiming to hit.
Our knowledge of the genres helped us also figure out our target audience, for example dance and house are becoming more popular in today's society than they ever used to be and some songs are even reaching the charts: Fast Car by Jonas Blue is a recent dance single that hit the charts and it growing quickly. This is massively different to how the charts used to look years ago because it was all pop music and now we see a massive variety.

Even research onto social media helped us as we could see what type of people follow the artist. For this example I used Avicii as not only was he one of the biggest inspirations for our music video but he has such a big fan base so it was interesting to see what range of people were following him. As you can see below, his Facebook has the biggest following by quite a massive amount at 19 million likes on his page, and it even tells me that I have liked the page along with 26 other friends. And these 26 friends are all within the target audience, on Instagram he has 3.2 million followers and on Twitter he has 1.7 million. In one button I could simply press the followers and it would show me everyone who followers him so I could get an idea and the majority of people that followed him were people within the ages 16-24. The advantages of following such a big artist is to be updated of any events/festivals they might be going to and to see behind the scenes and music videos on release, it gives the audience a reason to follow.

After we had made the majority of our music video, we got some people from our target audience in to watch and give us their opinion on it, we asked them a couple questions and they would tell us whether it felt like a dance music video and what they may have liked/disliked about it. In the video below one of the questions we asked Joe and Karl was "could you see this being a professional video, like on TV or music channels?". Their response to this question was very good as they said that they could see it being on TV but also justified there answer by relating it to other artists who have used this type of video before with the same type of music, for example Avicii and Calvin Harris.

We also got feedback for our digipak, as at the time our group was stuck with 2 designs and wanted to know what people from our target audience liked more. So I made 2 print outs of the actual digipaks and let them look at them both and give their opinions. We listened to our target audience and thought it was the best to do what they wanted as after all that's the group we are trying to impress and want to buy our product so its best to give them what they want.

Although I didn't record this audience feedback, once we had finished the video I went away and showed my family. Only my two brothers who are 23 were in range of our target audience and they really liked the video, they believed that the song did match the video and even they related it back to Avicci. This is very good as if our video reminds people of Avicii then we must have done a good job in making our video seem similar to it. My sister who is only 11 also liked the video which was strange as she doesn't listen to that sort of music but enjoyed the video, this could be slightly biased because I was in it but never the less interesting to know. My parents most definitely don't listen to this music but they even thought that the way the video was constructed through its use of many shots and first person looked really good and suited the music.
Overall I believe that we made 3 very good products that our target audience would love and from the feedback we got it looks like we achieved this. The target audience was from 16-24 and everyone in that category liked the music video, even people outside of that range enjoyed it which shows this genre has a wide range and can be enjoyed by anyone no matter the age. If I could do this again, I would like to do something more exciting and include some extreme sports to make the video that bit more exciting.
